International Airport |

Incheon International Airport, the largest airport in Korea, is also one of the
largest in Asia. The airport opened in early 2001 and is now the center for
Korean Air and Asiana Airlines. The international airport was established to
take over the international functions of the Gimpo Airport (formerly Kimpo
International Airport). Today Gimpo Airport offers flights to Haneda Airport in
Tokyo, but mostly runs domestic flights. Incheon International Airport plays a
pivotal role in international civilian air transportation and cargo traffic. In
preparation for terrorist attacks and epidemics that may break out in Asia,
airport security facilities and medical inspection equipments are highly
advanced. In this regard, the airport is lauded as the most technologically
facilitated airport in Asia. It ranks sixth among the busiest airports in Asia
following Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport, Tokyo), Bangkok
International Airport (Bangkok), Narita International Airport (Tokyo), Hong Kong
International Airport (Hong Kong), and Singapore Changi Airport (Singapore).

Gimpo Airport (formerly Kimpo International Airport) used to be the primary
international airport for Korea before it was replaced by Incheon International
Airport in 2001. It is now the second largest airport in Korea.
In 1951, the U.S. forces built a runway during the Korean War, which
later grew to become Gimpo Airport. Today the airport handles 226,000 flights
annually. There are two runways (3600 m45 m & 3200 m60 m), two passenger
terminals, and one cargo terminal.
The airport is situated in the south of the Han River in western Seoul.
(The name "Gimpo" comes from the nearby city of Gimpo.) In the 1990s, Line 5 of
the Seoul Subway was extended to provide transportation between the airport and
the downtown Seoul. There are also buses that operate daily to connect the
airport with the capital city.
Future plans include Seoul Subway Line 9 to Banpo, and a rail link to
Incheon International Airport and Seoul Station.
